Where to Paddle

4 Great Floats
Near Springfield

James River kayaking
Beginner

James River

Springfield's backyard float

6–14 miles depending on access point
2–5 hours

The James River runs right through the Springfield area, making it the most convenient option for a quick day trip. Water levels vary by season — best floated after a good rain.

  • Multiple easy access points near Springfield
  • Clear, shallow water — great for families
  • Gravel bars perfect for lunch stops
  • Minimal current — easy paddling pace

Local tip: Put in at Lake Springfield Park for a mellow stretch with easy takeout options.

Finley River kayaking
Beginner

Finley River

Crystal clear and close to home

4–10 miles
2–4 hours

The Finley is a local favorite for good reason — the water is remarkably clear and the scenery is classic Ozarks. It flows through Ozark, MO, just a short drive from Springfield.

  • Some of the clearest water in the Ozarks
  • Wooded banks with great shade
  • Gentle current — relaxed float
  • Popular with families and first-timers

Local tip: Finley River Park in Ozark is a great put-in with parking and restrooms.

North Fork of the White River kayaking
Beginner–Intermediate

North Fork of the White River

A step up in scenery and current

8–20 miles
3–7 hours

The North Fork is fed by springs and stays cold year-round, which makes it a refreshing summer paddle. A bit more current than the James — still very manageable for most paddlers.

  • Spring-fed — stays cool all summer
  • Stunning bluffs and deep pools
  • Good fishing along the way
  • More remote feel than the James or Finley

Local tip: Bring a dry bag — the spring-fed water is cold even in July.

Bryant Creek kayaking
Intermediate

Bryant Creek

Hidden gem in the Ozark hills

6–12 miles
3–5 hours

Bryant Creek is one of the more scenic floats in the region but requires a bit more planning — access points are spread out and the creek can run low in dry spells. Worth the extra effort.

  • Remote and lightly traveled
  • Beautiful Ozark hill country scenery
  • Rocky shoals add some fun challenge
  • Great wildlife viewing

Local tip: Check water levels before you go — Bryant Creek can get too shallow in late summer.
